· Many countries try to take claim to the creation of the first meat pie, however it’s known to be developed by the Greeks around the 2nd century B.C.  with just a simple pastry crust, onto which cooked meat was spooned

 

· The Romans took the recipe home and spread it throughout Europe by adding the top and bottom crust to the pie the pastry was not always edible at that time, it was just a means of cooking and enhancing the flavour of the filling

 

· Early settlers brought the pie to Australia where it's currently most popular but almost every country has their own recipe. Original Aussie Meat & Gravy version was available in Sydney in the mid 1800’s thus the Aussie recipe dates back over 100 years

 

· While you can currently buy the meat pie in any sorts of fillings including chicken, beef stroganoff or vegetable, the first meat pies were known to be filled with lamb while it is said the English invented the combination of Steak & Kidney

 

· You can buy an Aussie Meat Pie in every town in Australia as they are the biggest selling favourite at sporting events and festivals throughout the country.  An Aussie Rules Football final crowd can consume over 90,000 meat pies in a day

 

· Meat Pies are subjected to bureaucratic control and today, there are national competitions to find the best pie in Australia

 

· Australians eat meat pies for breakfast, lunch and dinner and is estimated that they consume over 500,000,000 pies each year for a population of 20 million people

 

· Pies today are conveniently located at every sporting venue, convenience stores, gas stations down-unda and they are the most popular on-the-go, ready to eat meal in Australia
